Samui Women with Trademark Headdresses Enjoying A Launch Break
Singapore Samsui Women on 12" x 12" (30cm x30cm) Squarish Stretched Canvas
Batik with orchids has been a distinctive feature of the Singapore identity, beauty and grace, as evident in many of Singapore’s national costumes and cultural influences.
Specially designed using batik as its base, orchids and butterflies are both combined into a design inspired by the traditional techniques of batik, which its designer lovingly calls the “Orchid Spring of
Singapore”. The entire canvas is finished with colour accents that reminds one of colonial heritage along with straight, neat hemmed edges.
The Samsui Women featured in the centre-piece here worked as general labourers on construction sites in the olden days. As their work involve carry building materials and clearing debris on site, they
soon became known as the Samsui Women. The red/blue coloured trademark headdress they wore was made from a square cloth and starched until stiff before being folded into a square-shaped hat.
Today, Samsui Women are no longer in existence as most had either passed away or returned to China. And if alive, most of these Samsui Women would now be in their 80s and 90s!
A perfect souvenir for those who wants to bring home a unique memory of Singapore and the
perfect gift for your loved ones.
